Subletting of HDB flats spikes

The number of subletting transactions spiked by about 69 per cent in the first quarter, surging from 3,902 cases in the fourth quarter of last year to 6,606 cases between January and March, according to figures released by the HDB on Friday.

The total number of HDB flats approved for subletting rose to about 27,300 units in the first quarter, compared to about 24,300 units in previous quarter.

‘The increased volume of transactions could be due to a higher number of renewal cases, higher demand for subletting of flats and greater public awareness of need to seek HDB’s authorisation for subletting of whole flats,’ said the HDB.

The median sublet rents have ramained stable, with slight increases for two-room and five-room flats.

The rents ranged from $500 for a one-room flat in Bukit Merah to $3,300 for a five-room flat in Central and $2,2500 for an executive flat in Bishan.
